Library services get ebook twist

BOOK lovers will be able to download their favourite authors for free with the launch of a new ebook library service.

South Ayrshire Council now has 200 titles available in electronic or audio versions for anyone with a valid library card.

Users can browse the catalogue online and select up to four books in print or audio format by entering a PIN.

Once downloaded they can be read or listen on a PC, laptop, mobile phone, ebook reader or MP3 player.

South Ayrshire Council is the first Scottish local authority to offer the service.

Councillor Margaret Toner said: “By introducing ebooks and audiobooks, we are giving our customers more choice not only in what they read, but in how they read, and for some it will completely change their approach to reading a book.

“These new formats are ideal for use when travelling to and from work on the bus or train, for listening to while driving or out running or for just enjoying at home.

“And they could make a big difference to those who can’t get out such as hospital patients or nursing home residents.”

Using US software programme Overdrive, downloaded books and audiobooks will automatically delete at the end of the lending period.

Only one copy of each book is held so if the book is on loan library members can join a waiting list. Library members can “take out” the book for seven, 14 or 21 days.

Among the 200 books ready to download are those by Kathy Reichs, Roald Dahl, Sophie Kinsella and Hilary Mantel.

The list also includes autobiographies by Barack Obama and Sir Chris Hoy.

Ms Toner added: “I’m sure this will prove to be a big hit.”
